Privacy policy

AlertaMap has no accounts, cookies, analytics or advertising trackers. Here is everything that happens when you use it, including what happens to a report you choose to share.

Who we are

alertamap.com is operated by Velkan Studio LLC under its Terra Continua and AlertaMap brands; its postal address is at the foot of this page. This policy covers this website and its map only.

What we collect

• No accounts, cookies or analytics. The site has no accounts, sign-up or comments, it sets no cookies, and it runs no analytics, so we do not count or profile visits.
• Hosting. The site is served by Cloudflare. Like any web host, Cloudflare processes your IP address and request details (such as page, browser and time) to deliver pages, keep them secure and report network errors.
• Your browser’s storage. Places you follow, older private reports and the keys that let you withdraw reports you shared are kept in this browser’s local storage, and the last few public hazard snapshots in its cache, so the map can show the last good data. None of this is sent to us automatically; clearing the site’s data removes it.
• Your location. The map reads your device’s position only when you ask it to, with “Use my location” or “At my location”, and keeps it in this browser. It leaves your device only if you then share a report at that point.
• Reports you choose to share. When sharing is available, a report is sent only after you confirm a consent screen. It contains the report type, the point you confirmed exactly as placed (or, for wildfire spread, the map cells you selected and the centre of one of them), the event it concerns and the time of your observation; it has no name, account, free text or photos. It is shown publicly to AlertaMap readers as an unverified community report for up to 6 hours from your observation, and it is stored in a Cloudflare database in the United States.
• Anti-spam. Before accepting a report, your browser solves a small computing puzzle and our server derives a keyed code from your IP address that changes every day; no captcha service is involved. The application does not store raw IP addresses.
• Email. If you write to contact@alertamap.com, we receive your message and address and use them only to reply, and for a removal request also to act on it.

Loading the map also contacts other companies, which receive your IP address and ordinary request details: Google Fonts, for the app’s font; OpenFreeMap, for map tiles and labels of the area you view; RainViewer and NASA, for radar and cloud imagery when those layers show; and Photon by komoot, for the place name you type, only when you search. The map area you view is not necessarily where you are. We do not sell personal information or share it for advertising, and sharing a report gives no permission to use it in other products or to train AI.

Retention and your rights

A shared report stops being shown as soon as you withdraw it or it expires; maps already open update within one minute. We delete it from active storage within 24 hours. Restricted recovery copies may remain for up to 30 more days (31 days in total) and are never republished; anti-spam records follow the same limits. You can withdraw a report from “My reports” in the browser that shared it; if that browser’s key is lost, write to us and we can remove the report. We cannot delete copies other people have saved.

We keep emails as long as needed to answer them. Cloudflare keeps request data under its own retention limits. You may ask us to access, correct or delete anything we hold about you by writing to contact@alertamap.com.

Children

The site is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data.

Changes

We will update this page and its date when what the site collects changes.
